Doing Business X-Border

Making decisions about cross-border operations is complex, and requires an intimate knowledge of a country's commercial climate, with a realization that the climate can change overnight.

Enterprises doing business in any emerging market country, or planning to do so, are advised to get current and detailed information from experienced professionals. Country-specific 'Doing Business' general guidance reports survey the following:

  • Country's economic and business environment,
  • Foreign direct and indirect investment regulations,
  • Structure of permitted business forms and related legal requirements,
  • Requirements relating to human resources including expatriates,
  • Regulatory requirements (such as payroll tax, social insurance, business profit tax and other principal taxes, tax treaties),
  • Financial reporting requirements and statutory audits,
  • General information about the country (such as geography and climate, population and languages, Government and political system, legal system and principal legal factors for doing business, international relations and associations, entry visas and work permits and living in the country)
  • Useful addresses and telephone numbers.

For example, interview findings in a Video, and Guides such as  Saudi Arabia 2013|2014 - Discovering Business (in association with the Saudi Committee for International Trade and the UK Trade & Investment) cannot contain definitive advice, and specific legal advice should always be obtained. In this regard, please note that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia only permits licensed Zakat & Tax Agents (eg, Saudi licensed CPAs) to render advice on Zakat and tax-related issues. Therefore, any reference to tax laws or tax matters in such guides are only meant to give a general overview of the tax regime in the country, and are not a substitute for seeking proper advice from licensed accountants.

World Bank provides lots of comparisons among several economies from various perspectives -- offering economic data from 2003 to the present, presented in a variety of ways useful to researchers, businessmen, etc. Such World Bank documents are useful for multinational enterprises.
